Heritage

In 1864, Prince Edward Island hosted the Charlottetown Conference, the meeting that led to the creation of Canada. This historic event has earned us the designation of “the Birthplace of Canada”, but our heritage dates back years before that, to the Mi’kmaq – PEI’s first people – to the later European newcomers who claimed Prince Edward Island in the name of both France and England, and to newcomers from around the world. Today, heritage experiences are available at our National Parks, National Historic Sites, and at cultural events and festivals across the province.

We’ve categorized our heritage experiences in three categories. For architecture and buildings, visit Built Heritage. In Human Heritage you’ll find ethnic heritage, hands on experiences, cultural festivals and industrial heritage. Natural Heritage is where you’ll find coastal & pastoral vistas and ecologically important places.
